fast but produces a very rough, slow cutting edge

Instead of "Save Edge", this file might be better called "Rough Edge". The Save Edge has a double cut (crosshatched) surface that is extremely rough--much rougher than the common "regular cut" chain files. Yes, it will restore the shape of a heavily damaged chain quickly, but the resulting cutter surface is quite rough and the chain will cut significantly slower than if you had used a finer file--even a conventional regular cut file. Surface smoothness is necessary for sharpness. Using a rough shop file, you could put an edge on a straight razor in no time, but no one would want to shave with it. In my limited testing, I found a 25% improvement in cutting speed of "smooth cut" versus conventional "regular cut" files (that were better than the Save Edge). After using the Save Edge to repair major damage, you could smooth out the cutter surface with several strokes of a fine file such as the excellent Swiss made Woodland Pro "smooth cut" (available by special order from Baileys). Even finishing with a conventional regular cut file would help improve cutting speed somewhat over the Save Edge. For routine touch up at each refueling, I use just smooth cut files to keep my chain running at peak speed.

From the first stroke, I knew I had found "THE FILE" I was looking for. The file bit right in and cut, no skipping or sawing back and forth as I had to do with another brand file. Just remember to keep the file clean as it is agressive and can load up. I sharpen on the saw as opposed to removing the chain to use the bench grinder which is then used when I really "rock" a chain . The flat mill file is really super cutting down the rakers. I highly recomend getting both the simplfy chain maintenence. FRED M. CT

Long Lasting

I have used these files with the Granberg filing system and these are awesome. I have sharpened quite a few chains with the same file and it still removes a lot of material with each stroke. I will every once in a while use compressed air to remove some of the metal shavings in the file and it is like brand new again. The dozen I bought should last me a long time. Good for me bad for Baileys.
