Change water into chainsaw oil? You bet! New Arborol chain oil is made from specially processed renewable vegetable oils and emulsifiers. A 1:4 mix of Arborol and water provides superior lubricating and cooling performance when compared to standard mineral chain oils. Arborol is a direct replacement for regular chain oils, so you can switch with no saw modifications. Because it's mainly water, Arborol cools as it lubricates. This means less adjustment and the chain can be sharpened immediately after use. Because it's concentrated, you save on shipping, too.

Great idea but beware

I recently tried Arborol in a Stihl chainsaw with very poor results. I mixed the product in the proper proportions with water and polypropylene glycol-based antifreeze (as per instructions) and poured it into the empty bar oil reservoir and started up. After a few minutes of light cutting, clouds of white smoke started to billow out from under the chain. Just to be sure, I remixed another batch and tried it in another saw and the same thing happened. I'm no novice with chain saws - owning and constantly using 5 different Stihls - so I didn't get the mix wrong or misuse the saws or the product. As soon as I replaced the Arborol mix with conventional bar oil, everything returned to normal. As a side note: Baileys insisted on giving me a credit for the Arborol - even after I told them that I wasn't looking for my money back. Baileys deserves kudos, Oregon Chain - the manufacturer of Arborol - should have done more research before marketing such a product.
