It splits wood by gravity and human force. You drop/throw the weight on the bar that extends above the log which impacts the wedge sitting on the log. The force of the weight hitting the wedge splits the log. Please see our IMAGES tab for more info. Feel free to give us a call for more specifics.

Hole diameter should be 20mm (.787") and depth should be 12cm (4.74")

Striking weight is 7.72 lbs. We cannot advise whether or not this would be safe for you. You should bring this information to your doctor and seek his/her advice.

We do carry the replacement parts for the Smart Splitter. I think you are after the impact washer #901003. We also have the mounting spacer which goes at the base of the unit. #901008.

We've been using the smart splitter on our homestead for a couple of months now and have split several cords as well as kindling. We have primarily hickory and oak on our property and it has been a dream even when used on some large and extremely dense seasoned logs. It balks a little at big knots and burls in the hard oak, but will still go through them if we persist. I'd recommend this tool to anyone! The single downside we've found so far is that the white nylon washer is compressing and cracking after splitting many cords of this type of wood. Luckily the washer is easy and inexpensive to replace. This is a GREAT product and I'm so glad Baileys carries it!

I have a remote cabin in Alaska where my only heat source is wood. I go thru 2-3 cords of wood every winter. When ever I can do to help reduce the amount of labor and strain when cutting my wood I'm all for it. I admit I was a little skeptical when purchasing the Smart Splitter. When I received the unit I immediately impressed with the construction of the unit. The when I got to using the splitter, I was blown away. I have used a maul or wedge for many years since I don't have electricity or road access to haul a mechanical splitter in.I split twice as much wood with the smart splitter that a maul. 10/18/10 This is the first review I have ever written because this product is so great. We have a wood burning stove we use mostly on the weekends. I burn 1-2 cords a season. I looked at Home Depot, Lowes and Costco at the 5 ton electric splitters for $300. I decided to try the Smart-Splitter. I figured for $100; what the heck. I purchased it last week. It was delivered on time with minimal S&H charge. Set up in minutes. I used an old oak round for the base. I am 5'8" tall and a 15" tall round was a good height. The drill bit comes with the product. It works just like on the video. I really like it because it holds the wood in place. Not all wood is cut even; but just like an electric splitter the Smart-Splitter holds the wood. Most wood only took 2-3 strikes to split; others first time. The weight is perfect; 7.5 pounds. The smaller blade is great for making kindling. I like the fact that it is maintenance free, no oil, lubing etc...

I depended upon my husband to chop wood since I have a chronic back problem. Now, with this wonderful product, I cut all the wood and once again, feel independent when it comes to my needs at home. This product is just so easy, it cuts anything, without any strain on my back! I am so fortunate that I found this product and can not say enough good things about it. DEFINITELY WORTH THE MONEY and easy to set up.

This thing does exactly what it says it's going to do. We stood out there with mauls swinging and getting no where. We set this thing up in about 1 1/2 minutes....we had enough wood for 3 days chopped in less than 30 minutes. It's SIMPLE. It works. I am GLAD I have found it!

I Do Not Like The Smart-Splitter. I LOVE The Smart-Splitter! I had splitting boxes of kindling (2' or 3" x 2') down to twenty minutes per (50lb) Box. Using a 25 lb hammer, and an awl (That nearly cost me my left index finger). This tool gives me the ability to fill 2 boxes in under twenty minutes. Near zero risk of removing one of my fingers. Way less "mysterious pains" the morning after, to be sure! Great Product, I Would ( and have ) recomend to anyone that has ever had to split wood. Thanks!

I am a huge fan of hand-powered tools, and this thing is great. As a side note, the box and Bailey's site say designed in Sweden, not made there, so don't be alarmed that it isn't made there. It doesn't matter, it just works. I got it today, set it up, and went to work, and even on the green wood I have here, it's wonderful. And it's a whole lot less exercise than the video makes it seem. I have about 10 cords of spruce and fir to split, so I'll update after all that is gone through. But my initial feeling is I will use this for all of it, and love every minute.

I would hate to challenge the idiots of the world by saying this product is idiot-proof, but it is probably as close to idiot-proof as one can get, given the occasionally remarkable cleverness of some idiots (I am a retired lawyer and used to do product liability defense). It is the easiest and safest method I have ever used to split wood (but not too big, as stated in Bailey's description of the product). As my shoulders deteriorated over the years from various injuries and arthritis, I had to abandon my Monster Maul, and sledges and wedges, as they began causing excruciating pain to my shoulders and elbows. I went to a Timberwolf hydraulic splitter with hydraulic log lift, which admirably meets my needs for splitting large quantities of wood. But for the occasional small quantities (or that piece that for whatever reason I just left too large), and for kindling, I found that smaller "kindling malls" and "kindling axes" were reasonably effective without involving my shoulders, but caused prolonged tendonitis in my forearms/elbows. The Smart Splitter is completely stress free for my body and is a virtual "kindling factory." This product is superb!

Not made in Sweden as advertised. It is made in China. Say so on box and it has that tell tale VOC smell that you get from opening boxes of tools/hardware that are from China. Bailey's Note: Thank you for the information.

After trying a bottle jack splitter with double hand levers and an electric splitter from Lowes, I ordered the Smart splitter from Bailey's. The Smart Splitter works as advertised and better than either of the two other "solutions" I had purchased. It is very important to set it up right and use a base that is flat on both top and bottom. I can't imagine an easier way or safer way to make kindling.
