WoodlandPro Single Bit Falling Axe (3 lbs.) with 26" Handle

The single bit falling axe (also known as a rafting axe) is an integral part of the timber fallers gear. These axes are used primarily to drive wedges, clear brush, and bump knots, but are also very handy for general chopping. The back of the axe is a full 1-1/4" wide and flat, perfect for driving wedges. Please remember to wear eye protection when driving wedges with these axes. Most loggers have one in their pick-up and one the landing also. Axe guard sold separately.
Loggers Tip: Paint your axe head with a can of florescent orange paint, and you will be less likely to leave your axe by the last tree you cut.

Q.	Who is the manufacturer of this axe? Also, it is the same manufacturer for Item number 15655 (the 5 lb. version)? Thanks
A.	We have these axes made for us overseas, based off the Collins axe design. Both the 3# & 5# are from the same factory.

Q.	What is the length of the blunt end of the axe head extending out from the handle? Could it be 3 1/2 "?
A.	On this rafting axe the blunt end dimensions are 2-5/16" tall x 1-3/8" wide, and it sticks out 7/8" from the handle. The bottom of the blade starts at 4" from the handle.

Q.	How are these axes tempered? Tempered hard at the poll and bit, and soft at the eye? Roughly how far into the bit / poll are they tempered, if you know? Dimensions of the eye (width / length)?Thickness of the bit at about 1'' back and 2'' back?Thanks.
A.	Tempered range is up to 4cm on bit.

OK head, inadequate handle and hangling

Head is somewhat better quality steel than other axes I've used in this price range and has a better starting shape, though the stock profile is cheeky. Handle failed on the third day of use. One side cracked around where the thin end of the wedge stops even though I'm not a big guy and don't swing hard. Bailey's indicated I could send the axe in for a replacement but I didn't see much point in sending in a head I had a couple hours' filing time on to get properly shaped in order to get another low quality handle and another head to file. So I rehung the head---properly, this time---on a better handle. That was most of a year ago. Still using it. The strength of this axe is the edges of poll are quite square and drive wedges with minimal slipping. Three pounds is enough swing weight up for most timber up to 16 inches or so in diameter and it's enough to still get the job done on those leaners significant bind. A 3.5 or 4 pound head would be a better all round option but, given a choice between 3 or 5, 3 is preferable in my neck of the woods as I'm mostly working smaller stuff. As Josh mentioned, the handle's girth is on the large side and is probably not so comfortable unless you have large hands. As folks reviewing the five pound version mentioned, the handle needs taping to avoid splintering and the axe may or may not be well hung. The one I got held the first couple days but had started slipping before the handle cracked. (Crack happened with the head well seated; I wasn't abusing the axe.)

3lb axe

I just recently purchased this axe,and when i opened it i was really disappointed with the handle that was on it. I have small hands and the handle is way to big. I can grip it but not comfortably. I would suggest that a smaller (thinner) handle be placed in these axes.
