This Grandberg filing guide was invented by the gentleman that we get the Alaskan Mills from. This can file at the 10 degrees required.

The unit can take any size file. For your chain typically the 3/16" size files are recommended by the manufacturers. Many customers also use the 5/32" files for 325 chain.

This only files the cutter tooth. About the only tool that does both at the same time is the Chainsharp. Put "Chainsharp" in the search field to see all we offer.

Greetings - They will not file the chain square. Both guides would turn you 72CL into 72LGX if you used them. The only thing on the market at this time is the ATOP, item # 15280.

The edges of the Granberg's die cast parts were rough and poorly finished. Poor user instructions provided by the manufacturer (Bailey's video is better) makes it confusing to use. Clumsy to mount on the guide bar. Slow - it takes a long time to sharpen a complete chain. BUT, if you can figure it out, with a little practice, you can get very precise and consistent cutter edges. Good if you are new to sharpening, or if want very precise edges and don't have a large volume of chains to sharpen. Quality is disappointing. Not sure how long it will hold up. Also consider the similar Oregon 23736A.

Using this tool, my chains are as sharp if not sharper than new ones. Contrary to what's listed in the Q&A, this tool will hold a flat file to adjust the depth gauges. The instructions show you how to do this. It's takes some attention to detail to set the tool up the first time, but you will rapidly ramp up the learning curve after doing your first chain. Pay attention to the clamp that goes over the rivets - make sure it's parrallel to the path of the rivets or the tool will tip slightly after you have tightened it down. It's hard to describe, but the tipping affects the height adjustment. Again, just pay attention to detail. Tool works better when you oil it up. The tool is better made than the pictures would lead you to believe. The focus seems to be on function and not appearance. If I had my way, I'd clean up the rough edges and powdercoat the tool. Of course that would increase the cost without affecting function, but I like good looking tools.

When I first tried the Granberg, I found it clumsy and hard to use. I got frustrated with it and put it away for ahwile. The directions that came with it were poor. Then I saw the video on this site and gave it another try. It found it very easy to set up the second time and have been very happy with the results. It's all I use now. So don't give up on it!! Once you get the set up correctly, you won't look back!

This tool isn't bad for getting a real accurate sharpening done. It's not fast, I need to sharpen my saw nearly every day so I just use a file then hit it up with the Granberg every 4-5 touch-ups. Cheaply made compared to the older models, but isn't that the way it is with everything these days. Too bad Granberg doesn't make a premium model that uses more robust materials and better tolerances and fit. Annoying how the file holder thumbscrews keep coming loose no matter how tight I get them, and the top sliding rod would catch and jam. A little light oil helped.

Simple to use, well built quality piece of engineering, precision sharpening every time. For easy use, put the bar on the saw in a vise when at home, or cut a slot in a stump out in the field. You can't go wrong with this setup.

I ordered this after reading all of its glowing reviews here. I can't return it fast enough. The Granberg File n Joint is absolutely not for novices or those without stellar mechanical skills. I spent more than an hour trying to figure it out using the instructions and all I got was frustrated. Save your money and learn how to sharpen chains with a file and a standard file guide.

I just used this filing guide for the first time today and this works wonderful. Take your time to set it up correctly and you will get wonderful results. I used a cheap electric grinder in the past and it did not do near the job as this little tool. It is not the fastest process in the world but the results are well worth the wait. The directions are kind of poor but if you know the basics of how a chain is sharpened you should have no problems getting this to work. I used this with Save Edge round files that I also got a Baileys.

For the complete novice or homeowner who wants to sharpen his chains instead of paying $$7-8 per chain for a machine sharpening, the Granberg pays for itself after 3-4 sharpenings or touch ups. However, please realize the instructions that come with it are minimal. They also assume (wrongly in some cases) that your chain (say Oregon)comes with a complete set of specs for sharpening it. Strongly suggest 1st time users try it on 1) the worst chain they own, or 2) shortest chain they own if they own various length chains. Practice makes perfect, and take it slow at first.

The Granberg filing guide works great! Setup is easy, and easy to operate. Not as fast as an electric grinder, but the chains come out MUCH sharper.

Well this filing guide is the best thing since slice bread, easy to set up and man it does a awesome job sharpening. If you have to buy a sharpening system for your saw this is it, combined it with the stump vise you have a trouble free set of tools. Low cost and you dont need electricity...
