Upgraded version of the popular Oregon 511A grinder. This professional grinder now has a built in wear compensator for equal grind angles without adjustment. New clamping base is quick and efficient. Built in light for greater visibility. Works with all size chains, including 3/4" pitch harvester chain. Easily mounts to a work bench. A tripod grinder stand is also available separately, which allows for eye level grinding. Comes complete with 3 wheels (1/8", 3/16" and 1/4"), a dressing brick and wheel template. Minor assembly required.

Q.	I'm interested in this sharpener for keeping .375 ripping chains sharp. If they get the least bit dull, well you know. Will this unit set up for the shallow grinding angles needed for your high quality ripping chain? Second question, is this American Made?
A.	Yes, this grinder will sharpen any chain on the market except for the true Square Chisel. We have used the same (older) model for many years to sharpen all our chains, including the days when we ground our own ripping chain. The grinder is made in Italy.

Q.	Will this unit sharpen full chisel chains from Stihl?
A.	It will sharpen every saw and harvester chain on the market that would use a round file. The only chain it will not sharpen to spec are those that would require a 3 corner file, or the double bevel file. If you do not use these type of files then it will sharpen your chain. Q.	I've been grinding harvester chains for a year and find that to get all of the bad points out of the cutting edge, I have to grind them back so far that I burn the tooth up and all of the temper is removed for a ruined chain. Do you have a courser stone that would be more aggressive and do the job better. I don't like or have the time to grind them 3 or 4 times at one setting.
A.	The larger the wheel the cooler they grind. The Silvey grinders have an 8" wheel for this reason. Also we carry the Cyclone (AB6) wheels for this machine that add extra air flow to help cool as they grind. Q.	I am wondering if this grinder will grind both sides of the chain evenly because I took my chain to a Stihl store to get it sharpened and only one side was sharpened correctly and the other side was dull.
A.	Yes, it will sharpen both side correctly. There is an adjuster to equal out the grind tolerances of both sides of the chain.

Q.	Hello, I have been trying to find out if this grinder has a head to pivots both directions like the Maxx grinder does so that you can always grind into the tooth to prevent a burr from forming.
A.	No, the Maxx is unique in that respect.

Q.	can you use a diamond wheel on this grinder
A.	We do have a diamond wheel that will fit the arbor and wheel area. #45516 only has a 5-5/8" diameter vs. the standard 5-/34".

Q.	This would be my first chain grinder; I am round-file sharpening my chain now. Will I still be able to use a round file to "field dress" my chains in the field, then give them a good sharpening at the end of the job with this grinder at home, or does the grinder change the tooth profile and preclude dressing the chain with a round file in the field?
A.	Many folks will take round files in the field for that little touch up. Then sharpen proper when they get back to the shop. That works fine. Though I would suggest that you take out a few chains to the landing, so you don't have any down time while taking care of a burr or a bad dirt cut.

A.	Lifetime manufacturer's warranty against defects. Does not include normal wear and tear. It will sharpen the .325 chain with the 1/8" wheel.

Q.	will accurately grind rakers?
A.	For grinding rakers we recommend a raker gauge for accurate grinding. (#15225) First you hand file the first tooth to the right depth using the gauge. Then adjust your grinder to that standard and continue the rest of the chain with the grinder without the gauge.

I purchased this grinder to save money on traveling to and from the lawnmower shop and was very pleased with the machine. I was so suprise that my chains are NOW Lasting Longer than when the mower shop had sharpened them. Quality Machine !

vise problems?

I have the oregon 511ax. Theres nothing wrong with the vise or the materials its constructed of. Infact the vise requires very little pressure to secure the chain for sharpening. Its a precision instrument, no need to use force. I'm very pleased with this model.

Poor Vice

I bought an Oregon 511AX grinder about three months ago. I already had a 511A, but I needed to grind 3/4 pitch and decided to buy a whole new machine. I'm satisfied with the grinder but the vice is very cheaply made. After sharpening six chains the vice broke in half. When I looked at it closer, I was surprised it even held for one chain. I feel like Oregon should look into the problem and maybe use something other than pot aluminum to build industrial grade products.
