Q.	Is this a tempered high carbon ax head that you can put a fine edge on, or is it a softer metal like the ones in the stores that you cannot put a fine edge on.
A.	Here are the specs from the manufacturer on this axe. It is tempered high carbon steel 1045 - 1050. The axes comply the US Spec: ASME-B107.55, 45 a 60 HRc.

Double-bit axe

Looking at this axe with a critical eye revealed the blades were not balanced in size, or form. The Foundry work was amateurish. An axe of this quality could be purchased at The Home Depot or Lowe's. When I called to get a return authorization the representative was very helpful and a replacement was sent immediately. I returned the original and can't bitch about Bailey's. Everything else I have bought at Bailey's has been great.
