The Makita 6401 has been THE most popular professional chainsaw sold here at Bailey's. The 6421 is the 2011 EPA compliant version of the 6401. This rugged saw is made in Germany, by a factory with over 50 years of chainsaw manufacturing experience. Features a Mahle piston and cylinder, side chain adjuster, decompression valve, automatic adjustable oiler, tool-less air filtration system and internal saw brake. Q.	I have this saw and would like to try milling my own lumber. I would like to be ablet to slab 24" material. Would this saw pull a 28" bar? If so, what bar and ripping chain would you recommend? And, what Alaskan mill would you recommend?
A.	When working with Alaskan Mills you'll need to plan on a saw that can more than handle the bar you want to run. Slabbing means longer cuts at full RPM. You should use about an 80cc saw. Q.	Does this saw take a .050 or .058 chain? The product literature indicates .058, but your site indicates .050. I recently ordered some .050 chains for the saw via your site. Did I order the wrong chains?
A.	All the Makita info we have states .050 gauge chain. When in doubt check the number stamped on your drive link. Since Makita packages Oregon brand chain, there should be a 72 stamped on the drive link if it is .050, if for some reason you got a .058 chain there will be a 73 stamped on the drive link ... Q.	What's the difference between CARB compliant and NON CARB compliant saws? Is it the presence of plastic limiter caps on the high and low needles or does it go beyond that?
A.	Catalytic mufflers make the difference to burn the fuel more efficiently.

Love This Saw / Love Bailey's Service

I have two of these Makita 6421 saws, and both are great. The first time I ever cranked the engine over, I could tell it was a high-quality, professional-grade saw. After buying the first one, I had to have another, so I bought a second one. I also currently own Husqvarna and Echo saws, so I can compare them every day. I used Stihl saws over the last 34 years where I've worked; and I've come to discover that Makita (Dolmar) saws are surprisingly-great machines. They are durable, solid, easy-to-work-on saws, and I would recommend them to anyone. The price on the 6421 is very competitive, as well. Now, about Bailey's: I've called their customer service line many times to order various parts like chains and bars, and to ask questions; and I always get the most friendly and helpful people that you will ever find (and that's in a world where good service is the exception). I just spoke with "Tara" today, and even though the part for my saw (a cosmetic label) was not in their inventory anymore, she Googled the part and located it for me--without even asking me !!! What great service, and why would you want to go anywhere else ??? Thanks, Tara; thanks, Bailey's; and thanks, Makita/Dolmar for delivering top-notch products and service.

Makita DCS6421

Very pleased with the purchase of this saw from Bailey's, free, quick shipping and a box of fuel throw in was the icing on the cake. The saw was difficult to start for the first start. I probably flooded it because I was anxious to get it going. I checked for a spark and checked compression, everything looked OK but even with a dry spark plug it still wouldn't start. I removed the air cleaner and muffler and let it dry out overnight. The next day I put the parts back on and it fired up right away. Now it starts on the first pull without choke, very happy with it. Also thanks to Brian in the service department for his support.

Makita DCS 6421 Chainsaw

Great saw and very powerful. I used it to stump over 500 avocado tress. I would strongly recommend this saw. However, be aware that this may be a bit too much saw for someone who will use it for small jobs. The only issue I had was with starting it the first time. It was a pain to get it to start. I called Makita and they gave me a couple of pointers and that helped to get the saw started right away. Note if you are going to return something of this value to Bailey's, be aware that it isn't going to be easy. You will end up paying for shipping cost out of your own pocket and will have to wait 2-3 weeks for something to be shipped back to you. Bailey's did not seem to be too happy when I wanted to return my saw. In the end I kept the saw and I am very happy with this saw.

Great Saw

Bought this saw a year ago when the sold it with the upgrade cylinder kit as well. In stock form this saw has been great -- no end of power and well-balanced. It is heavy, and probably overkill for some of the cutting I do, but for an all-around saw that needs to be able to handle the big stuff I'm pleased. Very sturdy, I've had no problems after many hours of run time. Would buy this saw again for sure.

Worst Chainsaw I Ever Had

I bought a smaller Makita chainsaw in 1992, and simply wore it out. It was the greatest and most reliable machine ever. So when I went to purchase a new Makita, I purchased the Makita DCS6421 20 from Bailey's, and the only good thing about my experience was that Bailey's was great to work with. As for the Makita DCS6421 20 (that is a private label product from Dolmar for Makita) I purchased, it was impossible to start, and after having a new carburetor and two other repairs, it finally started, but won't restart for the life of Pete! Worst chainsaw I ever had and would recommend any other chainsaw brand over Makita!!!!! Makita lost a long-time customer without exception!

Makita Saw

I bought the 6401 a few months back and will say this is the best saw I have run. I use it for felling,bucking and trimming. I am able to run 4 bar sizes on it with ease. 20 in.,24 in., 32 and a 36. I was told it could handle up to a 28 only but I thought different and well i was right. The 32 inch bar is a perfect size for this beast stalk. Buy this saw today and you will never regret it.
