They need the corresponding female receptacle. On some boots, like item 26800, they are put into a sole that is glued onto the boot.

In most cases they cannot as the bottom of the boots do not have a working surface; i.e., too smooth to give any traction without the calks. It is not to say someone has not made a boot with both surfaces, but we do not carry such a boot.
