Okay, so some web searches yielded a few first-hand reports of Mrs. Palin's speech. Unfortunately, I still cannot find a recording of the speech which would have been truly interesting to watch! As one might expect, she endeared herself to the logging conference crowd by holding her hand up to show what was written on her palm. What did it say, you ask? "Loggers rock!" - an apparent dig at what she called the "lame-stream media" who recently ridiculed her for writing speech "crib" notes on her hand at a Tea Party event. Toward the end of her talk she complimented logging industry folks when she referred to an administration that talks about green jobs. Of our industry, she said "You guys were doing green jobs before green jobs were even cool!" Although Palin tailored some of her speech especially for the logging industry, her message apparently also sounded like someone running for office. She recounted a lifetime of accomplishments, from city council and mayor to governor and vice presidential candidate. Okay, like I said, that's it. Unless someone can find me that elusive footage on youtube or elsewhere. Ha!
On a slight side note, I had the pleasure of meeting Mike Pihl (of Ax Men fame) at the conference when he stopped by our booth. Mike, his company and many of his crew have been Bailey's customers for years and you'll never meet a more down-to-earth, sensible and cordial guy. A bit surprising, considering some of the shenanigans he deals with on the jobsite! He said that he did get to spend some time speaking with Sarah Palin and that she was smart, personable and truly cares about the forest products and logging industries. He said they spoke about the concerns of loggers and the logging industry. Mike said it was an incredible opportunity to speak to someone with "that level of influence." While I don't know the specifics of their discussion, I'm confident that he made one heck of a spokesman for all of us. Oh, and I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Casey Comer, one of our Lucas Mill operators and mechanic extraordinaire, had Mike sign the top cover to his Husky 372. Pretty creative, if you ask me. I settled for having him sign the back of my Bailey's catalog.

Join us at the Sierra Cascade Forest Products Construction & Equipment Exposition this Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We'll be bringing our famous Lucas Mill to the Conference. This is the 61st exposition and sure to be plenty for everyone there. It is promoted as the "Largest Equipment Display in Northern California!" Not only that but there will be a Logging Competition, "Wild Things" Wildlife Show and interestingly a Backhoe Rodeo. All this for free at the Redding Convention Center in Redding, California. Stop by our outdoor demonstration area to see the Lucas Mill in action and meet our friendly staff. As an added benefit for attending, if you place an order with us at the show over $200 you'll get free UPS Ground shipping (small print: Certain restrictions apply and we are not setup to accept cash at the event - credit cards or checks only, please).

Sarah Palin Keynote Speech Update... It hasn't been easy to find information about this speech which took place this past Monday. Perhaps the Redding, CA speech was overshadowed by the news about the "crib" notes she wrote on her hand at the Tea Party speech in Nashville the previous week. In any case, I was hoping to find the Sierra Cascase speech on youtube, but a search at this point yields no results. I did find a couple of first-hand accounts that said she was given "a Rock Star's welcome." I personally thought it was unusual to schedule a keynote speech three full days prior to the actual opening of the event, but I'm sure that had as much to do with Mrs. Palin's schedule as anything else. Other details of note: The two speeches she gave at the Redding Convention Center were completely sold out. 4,000 people paid between $54 for a balcony seat to $74 for a floor seat to hear her speak. If you find a video posted for the speech, please send me a link via our Contact Us page.

Well, here's an interesting news flash for you. Love her or hate her, you have to admit she draws a crowd and is one very interesting woman. NOTE: The "Nadine Bailey" referenced in the news clip below is no relation to the Bailey's catalog company.
REDDING, California -- Sarah Palin is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the Sierra-Cascade Logging Conference next February in Northern California. Sierra-Cascade Logging Conference executive director Nadine Bailey said Palin will kick off the weeklong timber industry gathering Feb. 8 in Redding, California. Bailey said the former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee has not settled on a theme for the speech but would be stopping in Redding in part to promote her book. The book, "Going Rogue," will be released Tuesday. Tickets for Palin's appearance go on sale Monday for $54 and up. Bailey has declined to say how much Palin will be paid for the speech.
After a hiatus of a couple of years, Bailey's will be returning to the Sierra-Cascade Logging Conference in 2010. The Bailey's crew will be demonstrating the famous Lucas Portable Sawmill, so if you're in the neighborhood, be sure to stop by and say "hi!" Now I know what you're thinking and, no, we did not decide to attend the conference after hearing that the former vice-presidential candidate was the keynote speaker. Though I readily admit that I think it will be one very interesting keynote speech and I'm going to do my best to be there to see her.
